Minnesota law requires mediation for almost every civil dispute.

There are a few exceptions, but generally, the Minnesota courts will not hear your case unless you have gone through the process of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) first. Mediation is the most frequently used form of ADR, involves negotiation facilitated by a neutral third-party. The mediator's job is to help the parties arrive at a resolution that both parties can accept.

If the parties reach a mediated settlement agreement, it is legally binding on both parties.  Mediation is often a faster and more cost-effective solution to resolving civil disputes than traditional litigation.
